Where can I go for a good meal in the north of Tenerife?
With restaurant recommendations is such a thing. As is well known, tastes are different: what tastes good to one, does not taste good to the other. The standard of "good food" is far apart. If you like hamburgers, you might not like fish. If you're a vegetarian, you won't go to a barbecue restaurant. And those who, like me, have lived in the country for a long time usually cook at home.
And then there's the question of how much are you willing to spend on food? Would you rather have a simple meal and a large portion, or would you rather go to a gourmet restaurant and spend more? You don't treat yourself to anything else and besides, we are on vacation, aren't we?
In the north of Tenerife, the prices for restaurant visits are cheaper than in the south and compared to Germany, especially compared to my old hometown Munich. From there, consumption is fun and does not hurt so much when paying. So how much does eating out cost in Tenerife?
It varies. Depending. Depends on. What quality? Alone - or in pairs? The restaurant critic faces many questions. Thanks to the Internet, you can now get information and the menu of a restaurant quite quickly and then evaluate for yourself how cheap or expensive it is.
Therefore, I hold back with price categories and give a personal rating regarding the price-performance ratio or my personal feeling for the price. Basically, I would say that on average we spend between 70-100 € for two in a reasonable good restaurant for a shared appetizer, 2 main courses, wine (4 glasses / 1 bottle), water, a shared dessert, a digestif, if necessary café. Since inflation (since about mid-2022), I feel that instead of once spending €20, I now have to put down €30 for a meal (one person). That would be 50% more, seems a lot to me but it sure has also become more expensive here.
I put this remark in front of my following selection. I am a man of pleasure, I like to drink good wine, which is why I tend to go to restaurants with a good wine selection. Together with my partner, we prefer good restaurants and are willing to eat out less often, but better. For us, that means a kitchen where dishes are prepared in an innovative way, dishes that you can't easily cook yourself. And one more thing. Restaurants often change owners or chefs, and then it can be quite different.
I am therefore happy to receive feedback on your experiences with my recommendations and your recommendations for good restaurants.
Last thing: I copied some links to the places and couldn`t finish it. So check on Google. Also, many restaurants use Facebook or Instagram and do not have own websites.
Restaurant recommendations Tacoronte
Parque Dragomar
For guests of Cliffhanger and Jacaranda, this is the closest restaurant that can be reached on foot.
Very nicely located, hidden in a small park. A visit while the sun is still shining there. When the wind blows, it gets cool faster.
(Breakfast, lunch, dinner). Reservations required for brunch (18-28€) on Sunday. Open from Thursday.
Here is the Menu.
La Tasquita del Mami
Gourmet restaurant with sophisticated cuisine. Unassuming from the outside. Upscale price level. La Tasquita del Mami
Pimienta Negra
Varied menu with more sophisticated preparation. Good wine selection and service. Upscale price level. Pimienta Negra
Restaurant with beautifully designed interior. Suitable for a nice candlelight dinner for two. Varied menu with more sophisticated preparation. Good wine selection and service. Upscale, but not expensive. Parking next to the church and a few meters walk. Reservations sometimes needed on weekends.
El Campo
Here they pride themselves on grilled meats of all kinds. The motto is therefore: LA MEJOR COMIDA TRADICIONAL EN TACORONTE - the best traditional food in Tacoronte. And I agree with that. El Campo
The restaurant spreads a dignified, Canarian ambience in an appealing rustic style. it is located in an old Canarian house. From the outside it does not make an inviting impression, inside it is very nicely designed and atmospheric.
Cofradia
Offshoot of the Cofradia from Punta del Hidalgo. Fresh fish species-appropriate and simply but tasty prepared. Reasonably priced.
El Pole
A kind of urban guachinche. Simple dishes prepared quickly but tasty. The first choice for the working people in Tacoronte.
From 14:30 usually packed. Be there in time. Opens only from Mon-Fri. Reasonably priced. Further down the street entrance to Hamilton Park for a walk afterwards.
Restaurant recommendations El Sauzal
La Barrica del Sauzal
My favorite. Good food specializing in meat - meat is grilled on hot stone. Other dishes also good. Great wine selection both wines from Tenerife but also from the other islands as well as the mainland. Wine also to take away. Friendly service from the always good-humored Chef Javier. Another plus - is also open on Sunday evening and Monday! Swabians listen up: price-performance ratio is right!
Tacoa
The local and oldest brewery with home-brewed craft beer. Food to match the pub: hamburgers & fries. One can go there once.
Casa del Vino
A must for all guests! The house is an institution. It is founded and managed by the municipality, which has set up an old Canarian house as a lively wine museum. It offers information about wine growing in Tenerife in addition to a wine tasting during the day, a store selling the wines and a great location. In the meantime, the restaurant has been given to an external tenant who runs the Xarko with upscale cuisine.
Xarko
The restaurant Xarko is located on the grounds of Casa del Vino. Varied cuisine in addition to the wine selection of Casa del Vino. It is a bit pricely. Seats on the terrace are coveted, so you should get there early. It gets chilly when it's windy, so bring a jacket. Great view of Teide, the sea and El Sauzal.
Gastrobar AIE
Gourmet restaurant in El Sauzal. Inspiring, innovative cuisine where a professional chef is at work. Very tasty. Prices: Moderate and reasonable. Reservations in the evening are recommended.
Other Gastro
La Baranda
Another must. Since two years the new in-place of the region. Fantastic, large terrace in Ibiza-like style. Focus on cocktails and drinks, simple dishes, hamburgers. Is propen full especially on weekends, which can lead to queues. Parking can be scarce. Recently (March 2023) a new, elegant café has been opened one floor below. Foodies will get their money's worth here. Exceptional decoration.
More Gastronomy recommendation in the region
Las Vistas
Another personal favorite. The location alone is sensational. If you make it up the mountain in first gear in your car, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. Puerto de la Cruz spreads out deep below. The Teide seems to be almost at eye level and the sea shines deep blue towards the visitor. Formerly a guanchinche, it was acquired - once again - by a German and developed over the years into a crowd puller. Here meet Canarios as well as tourists and residents.
Restaurant recommendations Santa Cruz
There are a lot of restaurants in the island's capital and since I don't eat there that often, I can't make that many recommendations. Popular food mile in the center near the church Nuestra Senora de Concepcion. Go there to the Calle Santo Domingo and choose one. In the evening, the locals and tourists stroll here.
I prefer the restaurants around the Plaza San Francisco. My favorite (good wine selection!) for a long time was the Wine & Cheese Bar. The food is good. Unfortunately, the restaurant has become more expensive, which disappointed me last time I went (January 2023). It is an interesting restaurant because this is where the better off Canarios (middle class) of Santa Cruz go out. For me, a very local flair.
Restaurant recommendations La Laguna
Bejeque
Very good cuisine, nice restaurant, very friendly staff and a dedicacted chef are waiting for you.
El Rincon de Tintin
This is not a restaurant but the famous bar and meeting point at night. El Rincon de Tintin has a huge bar where you get really all kind of liquors and cocktails. Packed at night on week-ends. Place to go to meet the locals and dance the night away.
Many Restaurants are around Plaza Iglesia de la Concepción in the center of town and beginnning of the two main streets running across the city.
Pure vegan
Plantae Gastrobar
Restaurant La Cofradia de Pescadores in Punta del Hidalgo
Freshest fish far and wide, right by the sea. Be there in time and not necessarily on Sunday, because then it is really crowded with Canarios. Reasonably priced.
Restaurant recommendation Bajamar
Also here there is a Cofradia a bit up the central plaza which is very popular. Arrive in time, i.e. earlier than the Canarios who want to eat miest between 15:00-16:00.
Cafe Palmitum
A café which offers real German cake. The German owner has established several cafes. Another one close by is Café Melitta located between Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo. From inside you look out to the sea and can watch the surfers. Worthwhile a stop.
Restaurant Recommendations Vegetarian Food
I admit it. I eat meatless but I am not a vegetarian. And the Canarios love grilled meat and gladly in large portions.
Since guests often ask for vegetarian restaurants, I took Wiebke's recommendations - thank you very much for that - and gladly pass them on.
El Limon and Roots Tenerife (Puerto)
Other gastro recommendations Puerto de la Cruz
Slow Coffee Tenerife
(specialty coffee warehouse) my guest Wiebke says: Specialty Coffee for the city hipsters
Zelena
My guest Wiebke says: A café and a kind of informal co-working space
Friky's Empanadillas (Puerto)
Empanadas take away and vegetarian and vegan dishes
Cheers!
Again, feel free to send me your experience of going out and restaurants. I will gladly try it out and amend my list. Enjoy.
